NUWARA ELIYA LODGE NO. 2991 E.C.
Year of Warrant - 1903
The Lodge meets at the New Masonic Temple, The Chalet, Hill Club, Nuwara Eliya on the first Saturday in the months of March, June, October, and December, with the Installation held in March.
The Lodge, which is the "Daughter Lodge" of Adam's Peak Lodge, was consecrated in 3rd September 1903 at the "Chalet", The Hill Club, Nuwara Eliiya.
A unique part of the Lodge's history is the fact that several Brethren including RW. Bro. C I Bayley and W. Bro. N W Davis sought initiation in Adam's Peak Lodge with the avowed purpose of founding the Nuwara Eliya Lodge. RW. Bro. Bayley stated this at the 21st Installation meeting of the Lodge.
Available records show that the Lodge in its initial years and until the mid 1950’s averaged a membership of around 60. With sadly the records for the most part illegible, the earliest available Master’s report is that for 1933. From 1935 until the 1940s, the Lodge appears to have thrived with an average of two initiates each year, which in the words of the Worshipful Master for 1939, assisted the Lodge to overcome the loss of four senior Past Masters during that year.
The Lodge was honoured by W.Bros. Walter Sutherland Ross and Charles James Bayley both holding the post of District Grand Master.
The Lodge has for the most part continued to meet in Nuwara Eliya, although for some time in the 1980's it met at the Masonic Temple, Kandy and more recently for a brief period at the Talawakelle Club, Talawakelle.
It is now back at its home in Nuwara Eliya and shows every indication for continuing to remain there. Having established continuity of working, the Lodge celebrated its Centenary in September 2003.
